What is the Best All-Natural Deodorant for Women?

My Favorite All-Natural Deodorants for the Wild Woman — Stay Fresh Ladies!

Body odor… Let’s face it, almost all humans experience this “stink” on a daily basis! This natural phenomenon, unfortunately, is out of our control. As women, body odor can be a real nightmare. We do, however, have the power to decide which deodorant we choose to combat our odor to stay fresh and smell great! The big question then is – What is the best all-natural deodorant for women? Let’s take a look at some of my all time favorites that smell great, aren’t harmful to the planet, and don’t cause skin irritation?

Currently, there are many brands of all-natural deodorant on the market. This can be daunting when making the switch or when seeking out new products to try. If you are looking for the best all-natural deodorant for women, then you are in the right place!

To aid in this process, I have reviewed a handful of all-natural deodorants for women (or men), that I have used in the past, am currently using, or plan on trying in the future.

Why Choose Natural, Organic, Eco-Friendly Deodorant?

Do you know what ingredients are in your deodorant? If your answer is no, then I highly suggest picking it up and reading the label. What you find could be alarming. There are many deodorants on the market that contain toxic chemicals that can be damaging to your body and cause you irritation.

Some of the most common chemicals found in deodorants are parabens, aluminum compounds, DEA, triclosan, and TEA.

What does it mean?

It means that there are toxins in our deodorants. These toxins are absorbed by our skin cells and enter our bloodstream. The most common “toxic” ingredient found in deodorant is aluminum. Aluminum clogs your pores and stops you from sweating. Some research has even suggested links between aluminum levels in the body and Alzheimer’s disease. This is bad and pretty scary!

Sweating is your body’s natural way of releasing toxins. By clogging your pores with aluminum to stop this process, your body is unable to secrete harmful toxins, which can cause uncomfortable irritation of the skin.

I switched to all-natural deodorant because I was finding that the generic brands I was using weren’t very effective and they also caused my skin to become very irritated. When I later learned about all the toxic chemicals found in many of the deodorants I was using, I knew that I made the right choice to use all-natural products.

Making the Switch to Natural Deodorant — Armpit Detox Guide

Our bodies are all unique. There is no exception in this when making the change to all-natural deodorants. When switching from aluminum based deodorants to all-natural deodorants, one might experience some symptoms that we refer to as “underarm detox.” There is currently little research out there on this topic, so we must start the conversation through sharing our experiences and understanding that we are all different.

During this “transition” period, you may experience none, one, or more of these symptoms. The most common symptoms include: an increase in odor, sweat, and sensitivity.

Aluminum based deodorants are packed full of nasty and irritating chemicals. When you switch to an all-natural deodorant, your body may go through a detox period. It is ridding itself of all those chemicals, which can cause these reactions.

Odor: If you find that you are experiencing some unpleasant B.O. this could be due to an increase in apocrine sweat gland activity, resulting in an increase of sweat which reacts with odor-causing bacteria. The good news is that your body is flushing its system and starting fresh!

Sweat: When your sweat glands are free of aluminum, you may notice an increase in moisture. This could be because your pores are no longer clogged with the antiperspirant chemicals, allowing your body to release more fluid. Although it can be annoying and sometimes inconvenient to “sweat,” this is a natural function of the body. I recommend carrying your deodorant with you and reapplying when necessary.

Sensitivity: Your underarms could become sensitive and irritated during this transition. The lymphatic system is releasing unwanted bacteria and can harm the skin. This should go away after a few days from making the switch. Personally I have found that if I use an antiperspirant deodorant (I forgot mine at home or ran out while traveling) and then switch back to a natural deodorant, I will also experience this symptom for a few days.

This is NORMAL, so don’t panic and don’t give up! Your body will normalize and thank you for it. Remember that it may take some time for your body to transition, but what’s the alternative? For me, I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I am not a doctor, so please do not take this as medical advice. If you have any questions about your health, please consult your primary physician.

Evaluation Criteria

To determine my top picks for the best natural, eco-friendly deodorants for women, I evaluated each deodorant in seven different areas which are listed below:

What’s the Best?

Top Pick: Sempiira Down to Earth Luxury Cream Deodorant — Frankincense & Lavender

Runner Up: Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Deodorant — Assorted Scents

Why is Sempiira Down to Earth Luxury Cream Deodorant the Top Pick?

There are many reasons why Sempiira’s Cream Deodorant is my favorite all-natural deodorant. I have to admit, however, that I am a little bias towards this company. The owners are good friends of mine and I just happen to LOVE all of their products! I can honestly say that this is true, not just because they are my friends. I truly feel that they have created fantastic products and have built a company that I can support whole heartedly. Don’t take my word for it though, try it out for yourself.

They have samples of all of their products for customers to try before they choose to buy them in their full size. Considering their products are on the luxury end of the scale, I find this feature of their business to be wonderful. I hate it when I buy a new product and wind up not liking it, but am stuck with it because I had to buy a full size.

Sempiira makes all of their products in small batches, from local and ethically sourced ingredients, so you can really feel the love that goes into every item. Also, this deodorant smells fantastic and lasts FOREVER!! When used every day, it could last you three months or longer.

Yes, this product is the most expensive out of all the deodorants, but trust me, it’s worth it!

Why is Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Deodorant the Runner Up?

Tom’s of Maine is deodorant was the first all-natural deodorant that I ever used. All of the scents smell great and it is cost effective! This deodorant is easy to find and makes the switch to all-natural deodorant easy and fun! Personally, I love the Maine Woodspice scent. It is woodsy and reminds me of the fresh, crisp air of New England.

Why Make the Switch?

The choice to switch to all-natural deodorant is personal. With that said, I will share with you why I made this small change in my life. Feel free to share why you switched or are looking to switch with our community. You can tell us your story in the comments below. We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic!

1. TOXINS: Toxins are toxins and I don’t want them in my body. Personally, the risk is simply not worth it.

2. HAPPY PITS: My body and more specifically, my pits are happier for it. I smell great and I don’t suffer from any irritation under my arms.

3. SHOP LOCAL: It feels great supporting local and small businesses. These days, I am pretty against mega-corporations and buying local helps drive down the emissions created in products freight transport and distribution. There are some excellent larger scale eco-friendly companies that I do support, but for the most part, I shop local and support the “little guys.”

4. KEEPIN’ IT GREEN: By choosing, all-natural and eco-friendly products, I am contributing to keeping Earth green.

5. SAVING MONEY: All-natural deodorants can be cost effective and tend to last longer for me.

Our bodies are all different, so make your own choices. Do your own research, ask questions, and try products that you think you will enjoy! Thank you for reading and as always, I am here to help you in your journey to a green and eco-friendly lifestyle. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

  1. I went through this whole article and read everything about the best natural deodorants. I actually loved all your natural deodorants that were layed out in this article. I’m actually going to  try one of those. Their price seems really reasonable to me. It is not really as expensive I thought it would be.

    Thank you for sharing this.

    1. Hi Sujandar,

Thank you for your comment. Which deodorant are you thinking of trying? The prices are definitely reasonable for what you get. When I was using deodorants that weren’t “natural,” I was going through them super fast (some only lasted me less than a month). I am currently using Tom’s Long Lasting deodorant and one stick tends to last me about two months. My Sempiira cream deodorant lasts about three months if I use it every day. Let me know what you deodorant you get and what you think about it!

      Stay Green!

  2. Hi Leah, I was really interested in this review as I had not given much thought to deodorants except for the aluminium aspect. As long as the product was aluminum free I would just grab one off the supermarket shelf if it was on sale. Thank you for educating me in the health side of choosing the right products and offering affordable solutions. i really enjoyed reading your article and would love to see more. What other type of products do you review? I am assuming they are all eco-friendly?

    1. Hi Cass,

When I first began this journey, my thoughts were very similar to yours. I had heard that aluminum was bad for you and that it had been linked to Alzheimers, so I also just looked for aluminum free brands. What I didn’t know or think about was all the other chemicals. I have now learned that the biggest problem is the fact that many of these chemicals clog your pores, stopping your body’s natural sweating process. Therefore, it is very important to read and learn about ALL of the ingredients in our deodorants to make the healthiest choice.

Green Roots Lifestyle reviews many different types of products. We review personal care items, household items, and products for when you are on the go/traveling. 3. We all know that we should always use natural things on our skin. Products with chemicals are not good for our skin health. We can’t ignore the concerns some of the ingredients in the typical drugstore-purchased deodorant products. We use deodorant on a daily basis under the arms, where numerous lymph nodes lie just under the surface of the skin. Our skin is sensitive and is prone to dryness and irritation, especially if we also choose to shave. Using natural deodorant is great way to protect your skin from damage. Great article and all awesome natural deodorant choices, thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Bushra,

Thank you for your comment. I’m happy you found the article helpful and informative. You’re correct that we really can’t ignore the health consequences of the products we are using daily. Please let us know if you decide to try any of these, or a different natural deodorant!

      Best wishes,

  4. I loved reading this post because I love learning about new things in the world and I had no idea that there were so many diverse and natural deodorant products available and I was ignorant to the fact of aluminium in your bloodstream!  That factoid alone is enough for me to give my deodorant the boot and look into the options you have listed here. The coconut reishi with charcoal especially intrigued me – can you tell me more about the benefits of charcoal to the skin?  I will bookmark this site for sure as it seems like you have your knowledge dialled in and I am especially fond that it represents and empowers a more natural and holistic manner in which to scent your body. I am excited to delve into more content. Thank you!

    1. Hi Bex!

I am so happy that you enjoyed this post and found it useful. Alaffia’s Coconut Reishi with Charcoal deodorant is a really great choice. It smells amazing and feels very nice on the skin. Charcoal has many fantastic benefits for the skin and has been used in skin care products and medicinally for a long time. Activated charcoal draws out bacteria, toxins, micro-particles, dirt, and chemicals from the skin. In the deodorant, the charcoal neutralizes odors, doesn’t clog your pores, and removes toxins. This would probably be a great deodorant to start with when making the switch to natural deodorants, as the activated charcoal helps in ridding your pores of harmful toxins.

Let me know if you decide to try one of the deodorants and feel free to share your experience with our community.

Best wishes and stay tuned for more content!

  5. Hello Leach. Thanks for sharing the best all-natural deodorant for women. I usually find it difficult to make the right choice when looking out for products to try out especially when I am in need of the very best. This list will make the search easier for me.

I’d go for Alaffia Coconut Reishi Deodorant — Vetiver & Charcoal. The reason is as a result of the coconut scent.

Are all these deodorant for ladies only?

    1. Hello Vwegba,

You are very welcome! The goal of this website is to educate and help people make alternative choices in all-natural and eco-friendly products. This is because, when I first started my personal journey, I didn’t know where to start either! It was so hard to choose and find products.

That deodorant is a great choice! It smells great and due to the activated charcoal found in the deodorant, it helps remove toxins from your pores.

These deodorants are definitely not for ladies only. They are for both men and women of all ages! Connor has used Alaffia’s Coconut Reishi Charcoal deodorant and Tom’s of Maine – Maine Woodspice and he has had a very positive experience with both.

  6. Thank you for sharing associate wonderful post regarding deodorants with immeasurable data which is actually necessary for our daily life.

I went through this whole article and browse everything regarding the simplest natural deodorants. I truly favored all of your natural deodorants that were ordered move into this text. I’m truly getting to strive one among those. Their worth appears very affordable to us. it’s not very as high-priced I believed it might be.

    1. Hi Mzakapon,

Thank you very much for your comment. I am happy that you found it informative and useful to your life. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

      Best wishes,

  7. Deodorant is one of those sneaky products that we use, but don’t often think about as toxic or poisonous.  We know that we wouldn’t want to injest parabens, aluminum compounds, DEA, triclosan, and TEA, but many don’t realize that we can soak them into our bodies through long term, repeated skin contact that we get from using deoderant.

My family and I use Toms of Maine deoderant, and I can say it works well for me, rather smelly man. ;). I usually buy Mountain Spring or North Woods for myself.

I think anybody reading this article would really like any of the above recommendations.

    1. Hi James,

You are absolutely right! Deodorant, along with many other products that we use, is one of those things that most people don’t even think about. We just assume that because we use it on our skin and don’t eat it, that it is safe. This, however, is not true. We should be just as mindful as what we expose our bodies to externally, as we are internally. It is easy to forget that human skin is the largest organ (active, living tissue) of the body. What we put on our skin is absorbed directly into our bloodstream.

I am so happy that you and your family use Toms of Maine deodorant and that you have had such a positive experience. Their lavender deodorant was the first I used when I switched to natural deodorants.

Thank you for your insight in this matter!

      With Kindness,

  8. Hi Leah Rackliff great article; I find your review thorough and helpful. My wife’s birthday is around the corner and I would like to include a deodorant in her gift pack hence I find this information timely. I am going to grab Sempirra’s Cream for her as I find it the premium of the products you’ve reviewed and my wife loves lavender anyway. I like that its non-toxic as well.

Thanks a lot for the information and best regards.

    1. Hi Victor!

Thank you very much for your comment. I am glad that you found my review helpful. Sempiira’s Cream Deodorant and Lunaroma’s Be Fresh Cream Deodorant are the top two “luxury” products and are well worth the price. Being that they come in cream form, in tubs, a little bit goes a long way, so you really get your moneys worth out of them. Both companies have other amazing products that are worth trying out as well. When you order a full size product from Sempiira, you can get a sample of anything you want, and I would highly recommend a sample of their Liquid Gold Serum. I am sure your wife would love it and anything from Sempiira!

      Stay Green and Best Wishes,
